What the agency is buying
DESCRIPTION The Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Network Contracting Office (NCO) 6, intends to negotiate a sole source contract with Biomerieux INC. for the purchase of bioMérieux VITEK MS Prime MALDI-TOF reagents and consumables and ChromID MRSA agar, at the Durham VA Medical Center (VAMC). Justification for this sole source procurement is in accordance with FAR 12.102(A) soliciting from a single source. MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry (MS), a TOF analyzer measures the mass-to-charge (m/z) ratio of the charged molecules. It is essential to identify and differentiate microbes when conducting tests to diagnose diseases and select appropriate antimicrobial treatment.
One of the most potent proteomics methods, MALDI-TOF MS, is a rapid, precise, and economical way to recognize and differentiate microbes, such as bacteria, viruses, parasites, and fungi. This technology produces specific mass spectra fingerprints unique to each microorganism and thus can identify them accurately at the genus and species level. It reduces the time to identification from 24-48 hours to less than 30 minutes.
